Series programme

Wednesday 19 October 2022, at Hogan Lovells International LLP
“From Wagatha to Google: Media Law, defamation and big-ticket litigation”
Catrin Evans KC, Hugh Tomlinson KC, Anthony Hudson KC and Ian Helme of Matirx Chambers

Our speakers have acted in some of the biggest media and defamation cases of recent years, including not only headline-grabbing disputes involving the likes of Meghan Markle and Melania Trump (and who could forget ‘Wagatha Christie’), but also cases concerning the interaction of media and privacy law with high-profile litigation involving the likes of Google and ENRC.  This talk will focus on learnings for commercial litigators from the world of media, privacy and defamation law.

Wednesday 25 January 2022, at Hogan Lovells International LLP
“Constructing creative climate and environmental litigation strategies - practical tips for claimants and defendants”
Adam Heppinstall KC of Henderson Chambers

Environmental, Social and Governance factors are not just buzzwords, but are increasingly becoming a practical reality for litigants in the English courts – not least as claimants seek to establish liability by London-based parent companies for environmental damage caused by their global operations.  Our speaker will offer practical suggestions – for both claimants and defendants – as to the effective conduct of such litigation.

Wednesday 8 February 2022, at Herbert Smith Freehills LLP
“Claims agaist Big Tech”
Matthew Gearing KC, Niamh Cleary and Jacob Turner of Fountain Court

As Big Tech comes to occupy the commanding heights of the modern economy, we are moving into a new world of high-profile disputes.  Our speakers will offer a tour d’horizon of claims against big tech.

  • The Drivers v Uber case (in which Jacob acted), the first Court challenge under the GDPR’s provisions on AI.
  • The claim being brought against Meta by a group of Rohingya people.
  • The ICO’s new focus on algorithmic decision-making and what this means for private claimants.
  • Class actions and representative actions against big tech.

Wednesday 15 March 2023, at Hogan Lovells International LLP
“How does London keep its disputes crown”
Lord Wolfson KC of One Essex Court

The past years have been turbulent ones for the London disputes market, what with Brexit, Covid, Ukraine sanctions, and a looming recession.  Will London maintain its crown as one of the world’s foremost venues for international dispute resolution?  What are the challenges London will have to meet in the coming years?  Lord Wolfson will lead a panel discussion on this topic, of urgent interest to LSLA members!

Attendance is not limited to LSLA members. Anyone can apply for tickets via the website
